As I look upon the river,
Though it seems both deep and wide,
I will hope in Thee forever,
As I cross the river’s tide.
Night and day I will be singing—
Singing as I travel on,
Soon across that river Jordan,
“It is better farther on.”
When Lord Jesus, He did save me,
Light divine within me shone,
And I know since that glad moment,
“It is better farther on.”
Jesus plunged me in the fountain,
Flowing free for all the saved;
I am His and Hope is singing,
“It is better farther on.”
May I worship Thee forever,
Ever more my song I raise.
Christ will surely fail me never,
Lift my voice in endless praise.
Now I wait and watch with patience,
In God’s Word I find my peace.
He will guide me through the Judgment,
Til all sin and strife shall cease.
Rest, my soul, in Hope forever,
All my doubts and fears are gone;
Jesus is my Savior, Keeper—
“It is better farther on.”
Far theron, but how much farther?
Count the milestones one by one;
No, no counting, only trusting—
“It is better farther on.”
Ending:
Farther on, still go farther,
Count the milestones one by one.
Jesus is my Savior, Keeper-
“It is better farther on.”
