Addressing the Question of Intersex Individuals
According to the Bible there are only two genders. Two sexes:
Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
A male and a female. The above verse was given before the fall of man into sin. Yet, Jesus reaffirmed this truth in the New Testament after the fall of man into sin:
Matthew 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
By quoting this, the Lord Jesus is confirming the same truth holds true. God made man and woman. No other categories exist.
Yes, but you are not taking into account the fact that there are individuals born into the world who would be classified as intersex. These people cannot be identified as male nor female. They present characteristics of both sexes.
There are still only 2 sexes. Male and Female. In the beginning God made everything good including the human body. But after man's fall into sin due to the workings of sin in the bodies of sinners, corruption has developed. This corruption may impact any area of the human being. Including man's genetic make up. There may be disorder in the chromosomes that God designed in the original creation. There is such disorder with Down's syndrome as people born with it have an extra set of Chromosome 21.
Likewise, with Swyer's syndrome, a few people (1 in every 80,000 births) have a 46, XY Karyotope which leads to developing female type characteristics.
Since God declares He made mankind male and female, we can conclude that every human being is either male or female. However, due to the workings of sin in the human body after the fall of man – there may be disorders that appear (common or rare) that causes confusion in the areas of one's sexual identity. This does not mean that the person isn't a male or a female – it does mean that identification of them as a male or female has been complicated through corruption of the body.
In other words, the intersex individual is not a third type of human being other than male or female. The individual is indeed a male or a female. But identification of the actual classification is made more difficult by the disorder in the chromosomes.
Another way of looking at this would be to ask the question are people with Down's syndrome something other than a human being because they have an extra set of chromosome 21? Absolutely not! They are as equally as human as all other people who possess the typical 46 chromosomes.
So too with individuals who may have other disorders in their chromosomes some of which present an "intersex" appearances. They are not another third sex of some kind. But they are equally a male or female as all other human beings.
Biblically, it comes down to this.
God said He made mankind male and female (Genesis 1:27).
Jesus reiterated and confirmed that declaration in the New Testament (Matthew 19:4-6).
Therefore, the Bible teaches there are only 2 sexes. 2 genders.
And yet, on rare occasions people are born with XY chromosomes (male) who have female genitalia.
We trust God's Word is true. Therefore that person is either a male or a female. Not both. No doubt there is confusion in identifying which sex the person belongs to. But that confusion comes as a result of the workings of sinful corruption upon the human body.
Just because confusion exists does not mean that the person is not a male or a female in actuality. The Bible insists this is the case.
We do not have to solve the question of male or female for each intersex individual. We simply know they are one or the other according to the Bible.
