Each Man Dreamed According to the Interpretation of His Dream
Genesis 40:5 And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream...
The butler and the baker dreamed ACCORDING TO THE INTERPRETATION of his dream. After considering this, it means that the dream was suited to the interpretation. Or, the interpretation came first followed by the dream according to it.
Yeah, so? What's the point?
Well, dreams in the Bible are types of the Gospel. Or of the Word of God itself. The two men in prison experiencing the dream are like the elect and non-elect of the world encountering the Gospel/Word of God.
And the Gospel has a predetermined outcome for those who hear it:
Ephesians 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
And,
Romans 9:11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)
12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
The Gospel (or to use the language of Genesis 40, the dream) was established for Jacob and for Esau. Just as the interpretation of the dream was established for the butler and for the baker.
All that's needed is for one to come and interpret the dream. That's when Joseph enters the historical account. He tells the two men that interpretations belong to God. That is, God long ago decided (before the foundation of the world) that certain ones (His elect) would be lifted out of spiritual prison (life as a sinner in this world) and have their relationship with God/Christ restored. While the vast majority of others would go from prison to the judgment of God of being hanged or cursed. The Gospel (dream) accomplished in the lives of all according to the set will of God; or according to the established interpretation for each human being.
