Are you Despising Prophesying?

Chris McCann
1 Thessalonians 5:20

Unfortunately many Christians fail to obey this verse:

1 Thessalonians 5:20 Despise not prophesyings.

21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

To prophesy simply means to teach from the Bible. So God is saying do not despise Bible teachings – but "prove all things" – that is, try the teachings your hearing by searching the Bible to see if they are so or not. Which is why the final statement, "hold fast that which is good" means, after you've earnestly checked out the teaching (prophesying) in the Bible – the things the Bible verified hold onto; and the rest disregard.

That's the proper way to receive a teaching.

Any who immediately disregard the teaching are in fact despising prophesy. And, of course, the danger in that is that the prophesy may be true and if true of the Spirit of God and therefore the rejecting of it is a rejection of God's truth.
