How Can Jesus Love the World-Yet Not Pray for the World?

John 17:9Ephesians 1:3-5John 15:16Romans 9:13

John 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

A few questions to consider:

1. If Jesus loved all people in the world – why didn't He pray for the world?

2. Who are the "them" referred to? Apparently they are not of the world. Distinct from the world He did not pray for.

3. In what way did the Father "give" "them" to Jesus? Could the answer be that these are the elect. Predestinated from before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:3-5). The chosen ones (John 15:16).

4. Doesn't the fact that Jesus prays for "them" given to Him indicate His love towards them. And His lack of prayer for the world indicate His hatred towards the world?

Romans 9:13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
