On the ass
Remember the Bible uses an ass as a picture of man in need of redemption:
Exodus 13:13 And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break his neck: and all the firstborn of man among thy children shalt thou redeem.
Christ also commanded that the disciples go find and loose a bound ass and bring the animal back to Him:
Matthew 21:2 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.
This loosing of the bound ass spiritually points to the loosing of a sinner bound to sin and to Satan. After the disciples brought the animal back to Christ He sat upon him. Sitting upon the ass represented Christ taking His seat as ruler in the life of the sinner He has loosed from the dark dungeon of sin.
Proverbs 26:3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.
In this verse God is drawing an equivalency between the horse, ass, and the fool.
