A Booth for a Shadow ... from the Heat

By Chris McCann

Lord willing, we will go more into this when we reach chapter 4 in our study of the book of Jonah. But for now, please consider these verses:

Isaiah 4:5 And the LORD will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence.

6 And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain.

The above passage relates to why Jonah spent time in a booth outside the city of Nineveh, and also to the experience of God's elect in our present time. Jonah 4: 5 So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city. 8 And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live. Notice the tabernacle (booth) is for a defence (cover), a shadow from the heat (wrath of God) and a place of refuge (from wrath of God) and a covert (hiding place) from the storm and rain (wrath of God).

No wonder God told us this:

Isaiah 26:20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.

21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity:

Where are we to hide from this awful indignation in the Day of Judgment?

Mr. Camping's studies correctly pointed out the spiritual meaning for the booth (tabernacle) is the law of God the Bible.

During observance of the feast of booths one must be under it (the law of God the Bible) in order to be properly hidden and find refuge.
